The Hyundai Green Zone Project was able to grow 30 square kilometers of grassland in the Chakanor district
Hyundai Motor Co. has teamed up with Ecopeace Asia to help turn an infertile desert into grassland in China to prevent seasonal dust storms and to create a sustainable economy.
The anti-desertification project is called the Hyundai Green Zone project, and it first began in 2008. It's currently taking place in the Chakanor district in the Kunshantag desert, which is located in Inner Mongolia, China approximately 660 kilometers north of Beijing.
Within the Chakanor district in the Kunshantag desert is a yellow dust that contributes to seasonal dust storms, which travel into Korea and Northern China. These storms lead to health problems in people who live in these areas.
To prevent this from happening, the Hyundai Green Zone project cultivated Suaeda grass and harvested the local plant, which flourishes in a desert environment.
The Hyundai Green Zone project was able to grow 30 square kilometers of grassland in the Chakanor district, and hopes to add another 20 kilometers by 2012, totaling 50 square kilometers in the region.
Not only will this prevent dust storms, but the indigenous people can care for the suaeda glauca plants and use them (as well as their seeds) for medicines that can be sold, creating a viable economy.
